POPULAR cafe proprietor Des Faul has taken over the Chain of Office as President of Sligo Chamber.

He accepted the role at a handover ceremony in the Hawks well Theatre on Thursday 11th Feb.

Outgoing President, David Kiely paid tribute to Des saying that “Des has been heavily involved in a range of voluntary activities throughout Sligo for many years, all aimed at helping Sligo Grow.”

David continued: “As a voluntary organisation aimed at improving business and employment in Sligo I am delighted to be handing over to someone who again has a proven track record in active citizenship”.

In his opening address to members Des outlined his background of doing business in Sligo where he now runs the very successful Café Fleur restaurant in O’Connell Street. He also made reference to his many years of working with the Chamber, Team Sligo and Sligo Tidy Towns.

Des said “It is a great honour to represent the business community of Sligo as Chamber President and I will ensure that the concerns and aspirations of the business community are brought to the highest level.

“Whilst I recognise that as a business community we are not getting the level of national and local government support that we need, that will not distract us from doing our best from making Sligo a better place to live, work and do business.”

Des is well known for his tireless work with Sligo Tidy Towns and can often be seen out and about, paint brush in hand helping to spruce up the streets of the town.

Prior to the official handover ceremony, Director of the Hawks Well Marie O’Beirne spoke to the members on how the theatre is operating and the challenges that it faces.

Marie also spoke on the theatre’s renovation fund, thanking the business community in Sligo for their participation and inviting more to help the fund which is important for the future.
