The Sligo Champion

Sligo oyster producers honoured by Bord Bia

- By JESSICA FARRY

A Sligo oyster marketing company has been verified as a member of the Bord Bia Origin Green sustainability programme.

Wild Atlantic Shellfish, representing the Sligo Bay oyster producers, announced the good news at a reception in Davis’ Restaurant.

Setting out just one year ago to diversify into new markets, the Sligo oyster producers renamed and branded their marketing company, choosing the company name Wild Atlantic Shellfish and the brand name Wild Atlantic Oyster ( www. wildatlanticoyster. com).

While continuing to supply the traditional French commodity market, the company now uses its own depuration facility to add value and offer its oysters ready for consumption in new markets across the world, creating jobs and export revenue at home.

Consumers in South East Asia, can now taste Sligo oysters as fresh as they left the packing facility at Lissadell only an international flight time earlier.

Congratulating the company on the achievement of Origin Green at this early stage in its development, Ms. Harkin highlighted the role of the Origin Green sustainability programme in promoting Ireland’s food, beverage and horticulture exports.

As the world’s first sustainability programme promoting food exports, Origin Green has gained substantial competitive advantage for Irish exports, and will, un- doubtedly do the same for the Wild Atlantic Oyster brand across the world.

Thanking Marian Harkin for taking time out of her busy schedule, Charles Kelly also paid tribute to Bord Bia and BIM for the huge support they provided since the company embarked on this new adventure.

More information on the company can be found on their website at www. wildatlanticoyster. com.
