IT Sligo celebrates Proclamation Day 1916
IT Sligo commemorates the centenary of the 1916 Rising with a series of free events open to the general public on Proclamation Day, Tuesday, 15th March. Theatre, music, song, exhibitions and academic talks will be part of the commemorations taking place on the Sligo campus. The programme will start with the raising of the national flag over the Institute at 12 noon and the proclamation will be read out by students from the college in Irish and in English, with extracts read from the speeches of Countess Markievicz and a letter by Seán Mac Diarmada, all accompanied by the voice and music of the Institute Choir and the Traditional Musical Society, who will perform throughout the day. A film and installation will be shown from 1pm in Room A1060 beside the Yeats Library. The play ‘ Kathleen Mavourneen’ by P. J. Bourke will be presented in Institute’s Black Box Theatre at 6pm, followed by selections from Seán O’Casey’s ‘ The Plough and the Stars.’ Dr Miriam Haughton, NUIG, will give a talk at 7pm, entitled, ‘ Mná na hÉireann 1916- 2016: Gender Representations and Politics on Stage and Off,’ followed by a talk by Dr James Moran, University of Nottingham, who will speak on The Rising and Theatre. An exhibition showing a series of photographs from T. J. Westropp, showing the devastation of Dublin City in the immediate aftermath of the Rising. Also on display in the library are a series of banners, ‘ Sligo Through the Decades’ put together by 30 Transition year students with the help from the staff of the Yeats Library.
