St John’s see past Benbulben

BALLISODAR­E United travelled the short distance to take on neighbours Aughanagh Celtic in the Great Southern Hotel Sligo Super League clash.

The game was only five minutes old when the lethal Paul Mc Tiernan crashed home a brilliant free kick to put Aughanagh ahead. Ballisodar­e United had the better of the exchanges but it took the new boy on the block Josh Verdon to mark his debut with a brilliant header on sixty minutes that earned Ballisodar­e a share of the points in a cracker of a game.

Calry Bohs with a goal each from Eoin Doherty and Paddy Heraughty took all three points at home to Real Tubber despite a thirty five yard screamer from Gerard Henry for the visitors it was not enough to stop the Calry Machine from rolling on.

St John’s move to within one point of the league leaders Ballymote Celtic in The Andrew Mullen Sligo Pallets Premier League title after a devastatin­g display of firepower at home to Benbulben FC.

Colin Feehily netting twice and a goal apiece from Conor Brennan, Malachy Spratt, David Heffernan and Darren Brennan doing the damage for high flying St John’s.

Hot on the heels of the leaders were Carrick Town away to Chaffpool United.

It was an onslaught with the visitors hitting seven goals.

Conor Shanley and Shane Fitzpatric­k each scoring twice with a goal each from Niall Comerton, Neville Murphy and Mick Corrigan doing the damage.

Once again it that player Alan Seery who scored for Chaffpool United.

Arrow Harps came unstuck away to Gurteen Celtic thanks to Martin Doherty who scored the only two goals of the game to earn a fantastic three points for Gurteen.

Ballygawle­y Celtic emerged winners by the odd goal in three albeit an own goal decide the game.

In- between Christy Markham netted for Ballygawle­y Celtic and Alan Harrison was on the mark for Cliffoney Celtic.

MCR with a goal each from Andrew Tiernan and Ciaran Har- vey took all three points at Sean Fallon Park at home to Coolaney United who scored once courtesy of Joe Cobbe.

It was a mixed day in the Connacht Cup 4th Round with only Manor Rangers surviving they hit Dynamo Blues for five without reply. Seamus Ryder hitting a double aided and abetted with goals from Hassan Ajip, Alan Hickey and Eugene Gilgunn.

Elsewhere, City United fell away to Corrib Rangers by four goals to one, Strand Celtic were sunk four nil at home to Westport United and Carbury FC conceded to St Bernard’s.

Boyle are now on 37 points at the top of the Great Southern Hotel Super League, followed in second place by Yeats United, who are four points behind their near rivals.

City United are in third spot, with 28 points, while Aughanagh Celtic are enjoying their season and currently in fourth place with 26 points. Dromore Villa and Real Tubber are battling it out at the bottom of the table.

Yeats’ Sean Pender is the current top goalscorer.
