Tennis club set for busy season
SLIGO Tennis Club held its awards night recently which was a joint event with Badminton and Tennis prizes being presented. There was more than 60 members at the club social night which was a good way to mark the recent successes.
Stephen Cunningham, Club President, said: “The function surpassed my expectations, and I was thrilled to see the harmonious relationships between the different sports sections in the Club.”
The Wehrly Bros Autumn League prizes were presented to the winners, and Stephen thanked Tony and Richard Wehrly for the generous sponsorship.
The top finishers in the Singles Ladder were also presented with their prizes by John Crawford, representing the sponsors, Reddy Architecture.
The Badminton prizes were handed out by Graeme Watt on behalf of the sponsor, Addam Menswear.
A special presentation was made to outgoing Tennis Captain, Mel McKeown, in recognition of the Trojan work he did for the sport and the Club during a challenging year in office.
Stephen added: “Thanks to all our sponsors and well done to the participants and winners in the various events.” He continued: “We are almost at the half- way point in the Spring League, with fierce competition at the top of all sections.
“Noreen Cassidy and Nick Miller will be battling for top spot in Group 1, while Ann McKieran, Ann Longworth and Arthur Mullan are the leading players in Group 2.
“Group 3 is wide open, with Claire Mulcahy and Caroline Hynes looking good at this stage.”
The AGM is taking place on Wednesday, 9th March, with the main business being the selection of officers for the coming year.
This will include a review of the past year and the setting out of the agenda for the year ahead.
Outgoing Captain Mel McKeown said: “As many tennis players as possible are asked to attend so as to ensure a vibrant and well- organised tennis programme for the coming season.
“I had tremendous support from my committee in 2015, but it is essential to build on the good work already done and to improve the quality of playing facilities for the members” Details of the AGM are on the Board.
The Club was represented at a recent symposium organised by Tennis Ireland with the aim of developing Tennis Clubs and some of the key messages from that event will be shared at the AGM.
Planning is also underway for this year’s West of Ireland Tournament, which takes place over the May Bank Holiday weekend.
All entries have to be on line, and require a Tennis Ireland number. You can register with Tennis Ireland to take part in the competition.
There are preparations in place for a St Patrick’s Day Event.
This is a fun Mixed Doubles which is scheduled for 5 pm on St Patrick’s Day, kindly sponsored by the Sligo Park Hotel.
Stephen said: “Players are asked to green up for the day that’s in it.”
