THE Captain’s, Lady Captain’s and presidents Drive In took place on New Years Day 1st January at 1pm before the Drive In there was a 3 person Scramble the winners were Liam Dennedy, Eamon Scanlon and Sidney Fletcher THERE was a big turnout for the Drive In The President Padraic Hurley was on hand to ensure the event went off without a hitch. CLUB Captain for the coming year Joe Fitzgerald showed no nerves as he drove straight and true on the first fairway followed by incoming Lady Captain Mary O’Connor showing the same panache and accuracy as Joe much to the approval and applause of those present. FRIDAY’S Open Stableford competitio­n was played in cool showery conditions but this didn’t deter the players who braved the elements from returning some good scores. 1ST Martin Cronin ( 11) 33pts 2nd Jimmy Noone ( 14) 33pts SATURDAY 15 Hole Club Stableford SATURDAY’S 15 hole club stableford was played in better conditions than Friday but with a sharp frost on Friday night delaying things slightly. WINTER Fairway Mats 2017 WITH effect from Friday 20th January a requiremen­t to play from fairway mats will come into operation at Strandhill Golf Club. WITH temperatur­es providing little growth during the winter months these mats will help protect the turf from divot damage which would otherwise take until the summer to repair. THEY are carried by the golfer and if the ball lies on the fairway. THE mat is positioned as near as possible to where it lies. THE ball is then placed on and played from the mat. PLEASE refer to the Local Rule displayed on clubhouse notice boards.
