Public lighting is to be returned to housing estate left in darkness for months
A Coolaney housing estate which has been left without public lighting for the last ten months is moving closer to seeing light once again.
Rockfield Manor, an unfinished housing estate just outside the village of Coolaney is slowly seeing a number of the current issues being resolved.
A meeting took place in December with a number of members of the Residents’ Association and Sligo County Council officials with a view to getting the unfinished works in the estate finished and eventually being taken in charge by Sligo County Council.
The Estate is in darkness since last March following the ESB’s disconnection of power to the street lighting.
Councillor Dara Mulvey, who has been pushing this issue with Sligo County Council for some time now, says his concerns mainly relate to “health and safety concerns, especially for older people, children, visitors and older people living in the estate.
“I will continue to assist the residents on these issues. Electric Skyline have submitted quotations for the repair and upgrade of the public lighting and hopefully the much needed street lighting can be repaired soon.”
Meanwhile, Councillor Mulvey says he will continue to seek more places for Sligo people on the Rural Social Scheme as it was announced that there would be an increase this year.
The Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar has announced details of where extra places on the Rural Social Scheme are to be allocated and Co Sligo is to benefit from this announcement.
The Rural Social Scheme ( RSS) provides vital community services in rural areas and it is being expanded for the first time in 11 years.
Sligo is to get an increase from 124 places to 138 places this year.
The scheme aims to harness the skills and talents available among low- income farmers and fishermen while at the same time providing income support to them.
