LINK ROAD PROGRESS
MOVES are underway to complete the final 31 metres of a road that has been held up for many years.
Sligo County Council has started the planning process for the construction of the proposed link road from the junction of Burton Street/ Pearse Road to the junction of Mail Coach Road/ Connolly Street. Plans and particulars for the proposed development will be available for public inspection in the Road Design Office of the Council in the Market Yard, until the 24th of March.
The council will be hoping to make significant progress on the scheme this year.
Welcoming the move Cllr Declan Bree said: “It is an objective of the Development Plan to have this new road link constructed which will allow vehicles from Mail Coach Road and Temple Street to directly access the Pearse Road and vice versa.
“Some 104 metres of the road has already been constructed as part of the Citygate development and the necessary funding was provided to allow the Council to take possession of that part of the road in 2013.
“However, 31 metres of land at the ‘ Candy Store’ on Pearse Road must be acquired to enable the Council to complete the road link. While the Department has given no indication when funding will be available to complete the road link it is important at this stage that the planning process is completed so as to allow the Council to seek the necessary grants for land acquisition and the con- struction of the road.
“The ongoing delay in progressing the road continues to cause significant difficulties for residents of the lower St Bridget’s Place area as motorists must use lower St Bridget’s as an access road until such time as the new link road is completed,” Cllr Bree said.
