Raising awareness about cervical cancer

-

MORE than 160 people attended an information event at Sligo University Hospital to mark European Cervical Cancer week recently.

Dr Vimla Sharma Consultant, Gynaecologist at Sligo University Hospital said: “I encourage all women within the age bracket for screening to attend for a cervical check when invited. It’s vital that we increase public awareness around cervical cancer prevention. By attending a screening, any early changes in the cervix can be treated. If these are left, some changes could lead to cancerous cells which can adversely affect a women’s fertility. Early diagnosis is crucial for survival from any cancer, so acting fast on any symptoms is key.” Cervical cancer affects about 300 women in Ireland each year and over 90 women die from the disease.
