Learning through play
Pupils from senior infants in St. Edward’s take their responsibilities very seriously.
That’s why, when it’s time to play ‘ dentist’, they down tools and treat the game as if it were the real thing.
Pupils are given different roles in the game, with patients, dentists and receptionists being required, with the latter proving to be the most popular.
“This is a collaboration with Markievicz Pharmacy and the dental section at Markievicz House. The children pretend to be dentists, receptionists, patients and all of that,” said Mrs. McGowan.
She says that role playing with a game like this will prove beneficial to children later in life.
“It’s great because they’re learning through play. They learn how to use the vocabulary used in dental care and it fits in with all of our healthy teachings. We have great support from Markievicz Pharmacy and children get their own brush and toothpaste and they practice in school.
“It’s a lesson for life,” she added.
“It’s fun. We can learn how to be a dentist,” said Krisshi.
“We get to be the receptionist and we take calls and then we make appointments for people too,” added Blake.
