ERU chase leads to ramming incident

A Garda Emergency Response Unit’s specially adapted Audi jeep has been extensivel­y damaged following a ramming incident which followed a chase in South Sligo after a theft in a Tubbercurr­y shop last Friday afternoon.

The drama began at around 3.30pm when a bag was snatched from a premises in the town. The ERU armed response unit for the region happened to be passing on patrol in the area at the time and followed a car in which two suspects had taken off in, when they came upon it at Ballinacar­row.

A chase ensued across back roads and eventually ended in Coolaney with the occupants of the car ramming the Audi jeep causing extensive damage. Two people were arrested subsequent­ly after they had taken to the fields in a bid to escape.

A man and a woman with addresses in Mayo subsequent­ly appeared at a special sitting of the District Court on Friday evening and were remanded in custody by Judge Kevin Kilrane to appear at Sligo District Court this Thursday.
