The Sligo Champion

Futsal blitz at IT Sligo

-

FORTY teams took part in the Futsal Blitz at IT Sligo on Sunday. SEVENTEEN Under 8 teams and 23 Under 10 teams participated in the event under the watchful eyes of John Russell ( FAI Sligo Development Officer, Damon Kearney ( FAI Leitrim Development Officer) and two TYs from Summerhill College - Adam Lynch and Gearoid Mulligan. ALL the clubs will now go back to their mid- week venues for four weeks before returning to IT Sligo for a final blitz day on Sunday, March 12th. THIS will conclude the FAI & Sligo/ Leitrim U8 & U10 Winter Futsal Programme until October 2017. THE programme runs for 16 weeks in total - eight weeks before Christmas ( Oct- Dec) and eight weeks after Christmas ( Jan- Mar) - as well as four blitz days at IT Sligo. FUTSAL is a wonderful game to help develop young players. It is a hugely popular game in South America and is a key reason why the South America players like Messi, Neymar, and Coutin- ho are so skil- ful. Be- cause the game is played 5v5 it allows for more touches of the ball. THE game is played on a small court so it demands good control and fast actions. THERE are lots of opportunities to score goals and because slide tackles are not allowed the emphasis is on skills rather than physical contact which helps the smaller player.
