Sensory room will be of huge benefit to families
Ballymote Family Resource Centre ( FRC) will officially open their new Sensory room next week.
The multi- sensory room will offer children and young people with cognitive deficiencies and other challenging conditions the opportunity to enjoy and control a variety of sensory experiences.
The project was a partnership approach with parents and the Family Resource Centre in deciding what equipment and resources were most suitable for the sensory room.
This approach ensured that parents in the community were included and respected in decision making process.
Claire Dineen, Manager of Ballymote FRC welcomed the room explaining how important it will be for the community.
“It will make a huge difference to the whole family not only the children to have this sensory room available to them in Ballymote.”
The funding was accessed TUSLA who are the main funders of Ballymote Family Resource Centre.
Additional funding was made available in December 2016, following a proposal outlining the benefit it would be to the community. The room can open up a whole new world for children. It will create a stimulating and yet calming setting offering relaxation and escapism for children and young people.
It will provide a stimulating environment which will address the therapeutic needs of the child, develop or reactivate senses of hearing, sight, smell, and touch, improve coordination and motor development, promote cognitive development by increased brain function, develop of a sense of cause and effect, develop language – more vocalisation but also and importantly promote social interactions for children with additional needs.
The official opening of the room is at 11.00am on Monday 20th February. Sean Hannon who first came to the FRC with his mum Holly to the Parent & Toddler group is going to cut the ribbon on the day.
