Sligo is well known for its strong sporting heroes, from young athletes right up to seniors, across an array of sporting disciplines, from GAA, soccer, rugby, swimming, basketball, community games, athletics, golf, the list goes on.
Two Special Olympics athletes paid a visit to our office last Friday to lend their support to the upcoming awards.
Heather Dunne ( Fairways Golf) and Mary T Dolan ( Shuttle Stars) are both accomplished badminton players, and have competed in major competitions.
They train regularly in Sligo Tennis Club.
Heather, from Rosses Point is also an avid golfer and said sport plays such an important role in her life and competing in competitions organised by Special Olympics has made her very proud.
Mary T, from Sligo town, is also a big sports enthusiast and says she loves playing badminton with fellow athletes in Sligo Tennis Club.
“We are really grateful to the Special Olympics for organising our competitions and for all the volunteers that take time out to train athletes, it makes all this possible.
“Going to the major events has been so wonderful for us, meeting all the other athletes too.
“It’s not about the winning that’s important, instead it’s about the taking part,” she pointed out.
So if you have someone who you think deserves to be in the running for a sports award, visit www. sligosportsawards. com, download the application form and send them into us before Wednesday, February 15th.
