SEÁN LEONARD R. I. P.

The recent death occurred of Seán Leonard, Gortermone, Tourlestrane. In his 80th year, Seán had retired some 15 years ago from his work with the Department of Agriculture with whom he had worked for 40 years. Covering all South Sligo through his work as an Inspector and Advisor, Seán was well regarded and respected by all his farming clients and colleagues.

Seán was also an ardent supporter of GAA, both his club and county, and he was very involved with Tourlestrane GAA Club in the 1960s and 70’ s where he served in various positions, including manager of under- 21 and senior teams. He was a club patron till his death. He was also a farmer of note himself and was a pedigree cattle breeder of Angus and Hereford cattle. A great conversationalist with a wide knowledge of many local and global topics, it was always a pleasure to chat to him.

Seán’s remains reposed at the Morahan funeral home and removal was to Tourlestrane Church. Burial took place in Rhue Cemetery and a Guard of Honour from Tourlestrane GAA Club was a fitting tribute to a great club man. He is survived by his wife Nuala, cousins and friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.

SPEEDING TRAFFIC

Concern has been expressed in recent times by many locals about speeding traffic on the Circular road at the back of Teeling Street, Tubbercurry.

This stretch of road from St George’s Church to the new traffic lights on the Ballina road junction has become busier over the last six months, as the flow of traffic for through traffic has increased due to works at junctions. This knock on effect is more traffic.

Combine this with car parks and business customers along this stretch of road, and it is a recipe for disaster, and an accident waiting to happen. In addition there is a pedestrian crossing at the rear of SuperValu and many pedestrians report ‘ near misses’ with speeding cars.

Correspondence will be going to the National Roads Authority and Sligo County Council to take necessary actions to slow this traffic down. A menu of actions including Speed Cameras, Continual White Lines and Signage need to be considered.
