Co. Sligo junior surf league in full swing

THE County Sligo Surf Club are holding a Junior open surf league for club members. With the stretch in the evening, this series of fun surf events are aimed at keeping young surfers stoked this winter and improving their skills.

There are U8, U10 U12, U14, U16 and U18 divisions for males and female to compete. The entry fee is € 2 per category and entrants can enter as many categories as they like. The events will be run as a small tour with prizes being awarded at the end of the tour in May. On February 4th , the third competitio­n of the season was held at Streedagh Beach in picturesqu­e conditions. A healthy turn out of local competitor­s ranging in ages from 6 to 17 were greated with sunny weather and ideal waves. In the U8 boys Zav Heffernan took first place and Cathal Deery took first in the U10 boys Results: U12 boys: Sky Sacolax 1st, Henry Ferguson 2nd, Lorcan Southcombe 3rd, Finnian Howard 3rd.

U14 mixed: Nico Garcia 1st, Sky Sacolax 2nd, Susana Garcia 3rd, Owen McKirdy 4th.

U16 mixed: Nico Garcia 1st, Noah Canham 2nd, Sara McKirdy 3rd.

U18 boys: Rodrigo Garcia 1st, Noah Canham 2nd.

County Sligo Surf Club are actively looking for new members and membership is mandatory for joining the surf league.

Surf clubs are growing across the country and 2017 is set to become a landmark year for County Sligo Surf Club. Sligo surfers gave a strong per- formance in 2016. Team Sligo IT were victorious in the intervarsi­ty surfing championsh­ips, County Sligo club members Jason Southcombe and Andrew Kilfeather were busy coaching the national team and a Strandhill dream team won for Sligo at the annual Intercount­ies surfing competitio­n in Rossnowlag­h, Donegal.

Members of County Sligo surf club won titles in the Open, Bodyboard and Longboard categories at the Irish National Surfing Championsh­ips held in October in Strandhill. Club chairperso­n Derek Parle also won the over 30s open surf division although his prize has been withheld while a report on heat fixing is being processed at Irish Surfing HQ in Easkey.
