A Sligo mother has been prosecuted by the Child and Family Agency for failing to ensure her daughter went to school.

The mother was accused of failing to send her 13- year- old daughter to school on September 26th 2016 in contravention of a School Attendance Notice issued on September 8th 2016.

The court heard that since January 23rd, the child had missed six days out of 16.

When asked by Judge Kevin Kilrane why the child was absent, the woman said the girl was sick with “girls complaints”.

“That’s about 40 per cent of attendance,” said Judge Kilrane, who said he was “very suspicious of the nature of the complaint given”.

The woman said she had met with the principal and intended signing her daughter into school every day from now on.

Judge Kilrane adjourned the case for one month to monitor the girl’s attendance.
