“Anyone who assaults a Garda in the manner described, imprisonment must follow,” he said, adding that Gardaí must be protected.

He sentenced Johnny McGinley to six months in prison and fined Teague ¤ 500 for ripping the stab vest. Mr O’Sullivan then asked the Judge for permission to use the ¤ 2,000 which was meant for Garda Healy’s compensation as a cash bail bond to allow Johnny McGinley appeal his sentence.

Judge Kilrane agreed, the money was handed in as a bail bond and Johnny McGinley left the court on bail pending the appeal of his sentence to the Circuit Court of Appeal.

An Enniscrone man has avoided a conviction for not having proper car number plates.

Andrew Carr ( 26) of The Meadows, Enniscrone, was charged with not having the right type of number plate on the front and back of his car at Pier Road, Enniscone on June 8th last year.

Inspector Donal Sweeney said Carr changed his number plates the day after he was stopped by Gardaí, but had subsequently changed them back again to the old incorrect plates.

Carr told his defence solicitor Ms Laura Spellman that one of the new plates fell off the back of his car and this was why he was stopped again by Gardaí.

Carr told Inspector Sweeney that he put the old one on in its place.

Ms Spellman told Judge Kilrane that Carr travelled over and back to the States a lot to his family and asked him not to take his licence off him.

“I think as bad as things are with Mr Trump he’s not going to refuse him on the basis of no number plates,” said the judge.

“The problem is that the computer cannot read them,” he said, referring to the incorrect number plate design.

Carr gave an undertaking not to change his number plate again and was given the benefit of the Probation Act.
