Concerns over traffic speed on Circular Road

-

Concerns have been raised in Tubbercurry over the speed of vehicles travelling through Circular Road.

Councillor Jerry Lundy says he is planning to raise the issue in the March monthly meeting of Sligo County Council.

“It’s a question of speed more than anything else,” Cllr. Lundy told The Sligo Champion.

“I’ll be asking the council and the National Roads Authority to have a look at this and implement some kind of traffic calming measure, for as small a cost as possible.

“It just needs to be road markings or cameras or some- thing along those lines,” he added.

Traffic looking to avoid the town now goes through Circular Road, which is already a busy stretch of road with entrances to two supermarkets and a car park the opposite side of the road.

There is a pedestrian crossing on that stretch of road but Cllr. Lundy says motorists often speed through without realising that there is a crossing there.

Circular Road has become busier in the last six months since the new traffic lights have been installed.

“People are worried that an accident might happen because there’s been a few close calls there already before now,” he remarked.

The review of traffic flow through the town has, however, made the town safer and the new traffic light system has also been a huge success.

“The new lights are working fantastically. There’s no hold up of traffic now.

“It’s taken heavy goods and vehicles off the centre of the town. It’s a fantastic job.

“Traffic now that doesn’t need to go into the town can avoid it easily and has certainly made it safer.” he added.
