Green Schools flags play an integral part in life in the school community across the country.

The programme serves as an environmental and management and education programme for schools. It is something that Holy Family National School have invested a lot of time and effort into over the years.

That is apparent when you consider the school has earned five flags so far, and is currently working on the sixth flag which is for global citizenship.

Caoimhe McDonagh, sixth class pupil and Green Schools committee member, explains: “We are now going for our sixth green flag. This one is for global citizenship.

“That involves learning about fair trade and trying to be a better citizen,” she told The Sligo Champion.

Niamh Brouder added: “We get to do projects on the topics and we do a survey on all the different children in the school.

“We talk to people from different nationalities as well.

“It’s a lot of fun and we really like getting to do all the work on the project,” she added.

Caoimhe said her favourite thing about school is all the activities the pupils get to participate in.

“I like all the activities and sport like swimming and dance. We get our lunches delivered too which we all really like.”

Niamh said: “I like all the different sports we get to do in the school.”
