IF anyone was ever in any doubt about the calibre of sporting talent in County Sligo, the Sligo Champion Sports Awards most definitely proved otherwise. The star studded event last Thursday afternoon celebrated the best of local sporting talent from a wide range of disciplines. The guest of honour was one of Ireland’s true legends. Three hundred guests gave a standing ovation to Paul McGrath as the former Irish International entered the room, a fitting welcome for a man who probably in spired most if not all of the winners in some way. It was Paul who presented the overall winner of the Sligo Sports Awards to Cillian Gallagher, rugby captain of the Ireland
Under 20’ s. A delighted Cillian got the accolade of ‘ Sligo Sports Personality of the Year.’ The rugby talent is one to watch. But so were all of the winners in the inaugural Sligo Sports Awards run by the Sligo Champion. From one footballer to another, Conor Griffin, senior men’s sports person of the year was presented with his first international Cap for Ireland by McGrath at the event.
