Light Rail Network

-

Sligo County Council has agreed to support a proposal to build a light railway network linking Sligo and Donegal with Northern Ireland.

Members unanimously supported the motion from Cllr Declan Bree. “An investment in a light rail network can bring significant benefits not only for Sligo but for the entire border region,” he said. He said the proposal submitted to the National Transport Authority and Iarnrod Eireann to develop a light railway network linking Sligo, Donegal and the six counties was deserving of the support of the Council.

“We have no idea of how Brexit might affect us. However support for the development of a light rail network connecting us with our northern neighbours will certainly send out the right message to the EU and UK authorities.

“The proposed light rail network can form part of a longer term connection to the Weston- Track plan to re- open the line from Sligo to Galway to Limerick,” he said.
