A bridge too narrow at 8ft

-

A tiny Famine- era bridge first mentioned in the Council Chamber over 40 years ago is today still no closer to being widened.

Built in the time of the “ass and cart” in 1846, Knocknagore railway Bridge near Culfadda is only 8ft wide.

It’s too narrow for most modern day tractors, trucks and more importantly, fire engines.

Cllr Margaret Gormley called on the Council to draw up proposals to have a new entrance built on the road and apply for funding.

“God forbid if there was a fire - I don’t think it’s wide enough for a fire engine. It’s impossible to get past on this bridge,” she said.

“There are people who are prisoners in their own homes. This is in a CLAR area,” she added.

Councillor Paul Taylor said: “It’s a forgotten road and needs attention.

Responding, Director of Services Tom Kilfeather told Cllr Gormley that the 8 foot wide bridge affects the access of the emergency services and for farmers to their lands due to the increase in size of tractors and plant equipment in recent years.

Previously there was a plan to build a bridge over the Owenmore River and extend a private road with accesses onto the R293 Ballymote to Gurteen Road, around the Coagh townland.

“This idea got shelved as an agreement could not be reached,” said Mr Kilfeather.

“We will look at the matter again,” he added.

“I’d appreciate that,” said Cllr Gormley.
