Safety fears at N17 GAA Club

-

COUNCILLOR Dara Mulvey has called on Sligo County Council to address safety concerns along the N17 boundary of Coolaney Mullinabreena GAA Club.

Cllr Mulvey said there was a 1.5m drop between the N17 and the Nace O’Dowd Community Park at Achonry.

He told the meeting that the club has “serious concerns” for the safety of its members young and old due to the narrow road, the lack of hard shoulder and the 1.5m drop.

They are primarily concerned with the sand training area which is bordered by the N17 to the north and the pitch to the south.

Nace O’Dowd Park is also constrained between the N17 to the north and the proposed corridor of the new route to the south.

“If there is anything that can be done to assist,” said Cllr Mulvey.

“We are urgently seeking to implement appropriate safety measures to the benefit of all in light of numerous serious incidents over the years on this road at the park,” he said.

“It is imperative that we ensure the safety of the many individuals of the clubs, schools and community groups that use this busy and popular facility on a regular basis,” he said.

Cllr Margaret Gormley said: “It just goes to show if the N17 was done we wouldn’t be here.”

Senior Engineer Tom Brennan told Cllr Mulvey that the Road Design section met with Club representatives on February 15th to discuss safety concerns. He said “a way forward was discussed.”
