Fantastic times for Sligo athletes in Bundoran

ROUGHLY 2,300 took part in the 2017 Cara Bundoran 5K/ 10mile/ 10K races. Weather conditions were ideal for all the runners that showed the ruggedly scenic Bundoran coastline in all its splendour. The weekend’s proceeding­s were opened with 500 taking part in a 5K on Friday night. The race was won by Adam Cooke of Omagh Harriers in 16: 54. Sligo AC’s Fionnuala Silke was 23rd overall in 22: 18 and this earned her a podium finish as 3rd Female. Noirin Kelly was 9th Female in 24: 09. Saturday morning saw the 10 Mile and 10K races. The 10 mile race attracted 1200 runners and was won by John Travers in 52: 22. The Donore Harriers star, now living in Sligo and working in St Edward’s Primary School, led from the start to win in 52.32. Sligo AC’s Seamus Somers further enhanced his reputation with a super 55: 56 to earn 8th place and 1st M40. Next Sligo AC athlete home was Raymond Byrne in 24th with 60: 12 while Damien Kennedy was 28th in 61: 28. Jason Mulrooney was making his return to racing and he finished 43rd in 64: 19. Fintan Whelan ran 64: 21 to finish in 44th position and Domhnall Melly was 60th with his 66: 25. The indomitabl­e Lucy Brennan finished in 66: 54 and was 4th Female and 1st F50. There were good runs also by Sean Colreavy 69: 54, Joe Davey 72: 38, Enda Whelan 73: 24 and 3rd M60, Roseanne Mitchel 74: 33, Andrew McNabb 76: 53, Stephen Gilgan 77: 08, Brendan McCarrick 79: 56, Enda Gilmartin 81: 45, Cindy McCarthy 82: 22, Amanda Kilcullen 82: 17, Fiona Fahey Gilmartin 86: 14, Karen Rouxel 87: 48, Hugh McGowan 88: 30, Ann Marie Munnelly 88: 01, Rose Young 88: 53, Vanessa Foley 88: 54, Pauline McLoughlin 96: 33 and Olivia Seery in 106: 22. The 10k Race had 667 competitor­s and was won by Sligo AC’s Richard Gorman in 33: 04. Cartron’s Eimear O Brien of Donore Harriers was 7th overall in 38: 25 and this earned the Mercy College teacher 1st Female. Audrey Colreavy was 17th overall and her time of 40: 12 gained her the F40 prize. There were good runs also by Karen Sweeney 45: 14, Carmel Fallon 47: 42, Eilish Doherty 50: 32 and Bairbre Meehan 63: 36 Well done to all who participat­ed.
