Pre- deceased by her husband Tom in 1971, Winnie was always on hand to help out with the farming operations of her late husband, and subsequently by her son Michael and brother Mike. Never a woman that travelled much, she was always content in her home patch of Cloonacool.

Her remains reposed at the Morahan funeral home prior to removal to St Michael’s Church, Cloonacool. Burial took place in Cloonacool Cemetery. Winnie is survived by her daughter Eileen Brennan, Mullinabreena, sons Michael and Martin, son- inlaw Nathy, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister Rita ( USA), relatives and friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

GILLESPIE’S 80 YEARS

Congratulations to John and Mary Gillespie of Gillespie’s Menswear and Sport, who this year are celebrating 80 years of business in Tubbercurry. This is a third generation business who have been serving South Sligo since 1937.

Gillespie’s has been a family run business dating back to the early twentieth century, when Jim Gillespie purchased the business from his retiring aunt Molly Nephin in 1937. For the next 40 years Jim’s legacy of hard work and the triumph of good business acumen established the Gillespie business as one of the leading general drapers in the North West.

After the passing of Jim Gillespie in 1977, his wife Josephine carried the mantel in the very difficult socioeconomic backwater of the 1970s and 80’ s. In turn Josephine handed over the reins in 1985 to her son John, the current proprietor. John had served his apprenticeship in the retail trade of the late 70’ s and early 80’ s with Cassidy’s fashions in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and he opened Bolgers of Castlebar before returning home.

Gillespie’s have a strong retail profile, not only in Tubbercurry but throughout South Sligo and surrounding areas. Call to Gillespie’s next time to congratulate John and Mary on their business’ 80th birthday.
