Sally Gardens and The Belfry eye glory

-

THE Sally Gardens and The Belfry have taken a step closer to title success in their divisions in the Sligo Rovers Astro league.

Despite a reduced fixture list in the league due to the St. Patricks day festivities, both teams took giants steps to title glory in their respective divisions last week.

On Tuesday in the Championship division, The Belfry, who were top of the table, entertained third place Borussia Teeth.

A win for Borussia would have made it a three horse race for the title, where as a win for The Belfry would have reduced it to a two horse race along with GSS.

The Belfry showed their strong mentality and courage from the start as they raced into a 1- 0 lead through Kevin Egan, with just 10 minutes played.

Their lead was doubled 20 minutes later, this time through Ian Rossitter.

The result was wrapped up 10 minutes from time as The Belfry went 3- 0 up, this time courtesy of an OG.

Borussia got a consolation goal before the full time whistle through Cian McKeon.

This result ensures that the Belfry now sit 6 points clear at the top, albeit with a game extra played.

Hot on their heels are GSS in second place, who will be keen to pick up maximum points with their game in hand.

For Borussia, it’s been a much stronger showing since Christmas. For a team who had failed to win a single game before Christmas they and now sit third in the championship division,

It’s an achievement they can be proud of and will look to improve upon next year.

In the Premier Division, it is also a two horse race between the Sally Gardens and Sheffield Thursday.

Both sides met on Wednesday last, and the Sally Gardens came out on top 2- 0.

Goals came from the ever prolific Johnny Kenna and Niall O’ Donnell.

The result ensures that the Sally Gardens now move top of the league standings by a single point, with a game in hand also.

All is not lost for Sheffield Thursday however, as both sides meet again in three weeks’ time in the league which will most certainly decided on the location of the league winning trophy.

There are only a few weeks left in the league along with the Open Cup Semi finals and final, and the season is wrapped up with the Emmett O’Connor Memorial Cup in which all teams will take part.

This Cup will start on April 10th. This week’s fixtures are as follows: Tuesday at 9pm GSS vs EJS ( Open Cup Semi Final)

Wednesday at 8pm Sheffield Thursday vs Ballyshannon ( Open Cup Semi Final)

Wednesday at 9pm Borussia Teeth vs Adelaide Casino ( League)

Friday at 9pm Strand Celtic vs Sally Gardens ( League).
