Local farmers to address
THE Farming roadshow sponsored by Bank of Ireland in aid of North West Hospice in partnership with Nutrias, Teagasc, IFA and County Sligo Leader Partnership and other local businesses is taking place in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ballincar, Sligo on 23rd March 2017 at 7pm.
Dairy farmer Joseph Dunphy, Easkey, Co. Sligo will discuss his dairy enterprise with those attending. Joseph is 23 years of age and works off farm as an educational officer with Teagasc in Manorhamilton. He farms 116 hectares in partnership with his father and milks 270 Friesian Jersey cross cows.
Also speaking is beef farmer Marty Lenehan, Ballinfull, Co. Sligo. Marty farms 71 hectares and runs a herd of 100 mainly Simmental cross Limousin cows. He divides his calving between spring and autumn and uses AI on the autumn calvers and heifer replacements and runs a Simmental and two Charolais bulls with the remainder of the herd.
Ronan Gallagher, veterinary surgeon, Carrowcarden, Enniscone, Co. Sligo is a part time farmer of 40 hectares. He herds 60 purebred Texel sheep, 120 cross bred ewes and also has 20 purebred Charolais cows and 10 commercial cows. Ronan runs a specialist company called ProStar Genetics which specialises in AI and embryo transfer in sheep and also ram fertility and semen freezing.
