Geevagh win

- By CATHAL MARTYN

GEEVAGH Community Park was the venue for the meeting of Geevagh and Coolera- Strandhill in round one of the Benson Cup on Saturday. While both teams tried to serve up an entertaining match, this affair will be better remembered for the atrocious weather. Geevagh, under the guidance of Peter Bolger, now in his second season at the helm were first off the mark with a well taken score from play by Enda McManus. Coolera/ Strandhill responded almost immediately from the boot of Barry O Mahony. Midfielder Daniel Smith eventually broke the deadlock on eighteen minutes with a well taken effort from forty metres. Kieran Prior, one of two debutants for Coolera/ Strandhilll pointed from the narrowest of angles to level the tie before Conor Lavin gave Geevagh the lead from play. Kenneth Sweeney doubled the lead and this was added to by David O’Reilly. Geevagh were now growing in confidence and were unlucky not to have a goal, denied only by a last- gasp intervention from full back David McGee. Coolera/ Strandhill’s second debutant, goalkeeper Mark Connell had to be brave when advancing off his line as Geevagh’s Enda Mc Manus raced on to an inch perfect pass from David O Reilly as Geevagh led by a point at the break. Geevagh’s Dominick Kearns opened the scoring for the Blues. Kenneth Sweeney pointed another free as the home side began to dominate proceedings. The full- time score was Geevagh 0- 10 to Coolera/ Strandhill’s 0- 5.
