SLIGO 1- 8 ROSCOMMON 0- 5

THE Sligo minor team continued their good start to 2017 with a useful six- point defeat of Roscommon at Scarden last Thursday evening in round two of the Connacht Minor Football League.

In blustery conditions, Sligo adapted better to a strong cross- field breeze and despite only registering two first half points, they kicked on after the break to secure a second successive win in the competition.

The winners welcomed back panellists from St Attracta’s who missed out on their opening round win over Longford, and it was Curry clubman Red Óg Murphy who scored a decisive second half goal to ensure Sligo came out on top.

The home side struggled initially and only mustered two first half points – Ryan Walsh scored both – and Sligo went 23 minutes without scoring after Walsh opened his side’s account in the 7th minute. 0- 3 to 0- 2 down at the break, Sligo improved after the restart and kicked five points in the opening 12 minutes of the second half.

Two frees from Ryan Walsh were followed by scores from Rory McHugh, Luke Towey and Barry Gorman, while Red Óg Murphy added another in the 44th minute seconds after his introduction.

With Sligo three points ahead entering the closing stages, 0- 8 to 0- 5, Murphy’s goal in the 28th minute settled the matter, giving David Cummins’ charges their second successive win. They will look to maintain their unbeaten record against Leitrim next Saturday at 5pm in Connolly Park, Collooney.
