Book festival broadens pupils’ reading interests

PUPILS at Taunagh National School in Riverstown are being introduced to a host of new books as part of the school’s book fest.

To coincide with the book fest, the school had a wide range of books available as part of the Scholastic Book Fair which visits thousands of schools across the country on an annual basis.

Taunagh is just one of the school’s in Sligo availing of the book fair, which Principal Linda McMahon says is of huge benefit to pupils.

“The book fair offers the pupils a range of books that they can look at and then on Saturday they could buy the books. We get a percentage from the sales then,” she told The Sligo Champion.

She continued: “The children are thrilled. There’s great excitement in the school with them. They get time to browse and look through them. It gives them a chance to look at something different or something they might not normally read.”

Taunagh held a book festival as part of their open day, inviting writer Alan Nolan along to conduct a workshop on Saturday last, following his visit last year. This year was our

Third class pupil Ellen found at least one book to suit her interests: “I really like reading. My favourite books to read are Harry Potter and any animal books. I saw one Harry Potter book here that I really liked.”
