Funding for two local projects

TWO community groups from Sligo have been awarded funding from the ‘ Get Ireland Growing’ fund.

THe Calry Active Retirement Associatio­n weas one of the projects chosen, while the Diversity Sligo Poly Tunnel Project was also awarded funding.

The team in Calry said: “We want to promote activity for our members we set up a community garden two years ago which has now become very successful.

“A member kindly donated a polytunnel on her land and twice a week our group meet up and grow and harvest crops from February to November. This year we are hoping to branch out to include children from our local National School and we will also make the facility available to non- members of our associatio­n.”

The Diversity Sligo Poly Tunnel Project says, “Our poly tunnel is in a direct provision centre for asylum seekers. Volunteers and residents grow vegetables to use and have cooking sessions. We plan to involve more residents through training sessions with certificat­e of attendance. We will cover: mulching and composting, planting and propagatin­g, growing and watering, disease and pest management, weeding, harvesting.”
