SLIGO 2- 11 LEITRIM 1- 11

AT CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE, SCARDEN SLIGO made it three wins from three in this year’s Connacht Minor League after a much improved second half performance helped them to a three- point defeat of Leitrim at Scarden last Saturday evening.

In fine conditions, Sligo trailed 0- 9 to 0- 3 at half- time with Leitrim dominating the opening half, but the winners showed improvement after the break to edge out a win to maintain their 100pc record.

Red Óg Murphy and Niall Colsh, pictured inset, were the two most significant scoring contributors for David Cummins’ side with 0- 8 and 2- 0 respectively, but Sligo’s first half performance was disappointing. Though the sides were locked together at three points apiece after 15 minutes, Leitrim took over proceedings for the remainder of the half to lead at half- time by six points. Niall Colsh’s goal five minutes after the restart re- energised Sligo, however, and Sligo added five points on the trot to work their way back into the game. Colsh’s second goal after 47 minutes pushed Sligo into the lead, 2- 8 to 0- 11, and thereafter they extended their lead with three points from top scorer Red Óg Murphy to finish as three point winners, after Leitrim netted from the penalty spot with the final kick of the game. The sides will meet later in the year in the Connacht Championship semi- final, but Sligo’s next league assignment is the visit of Mayo to Markievicz Park next Saturday afternoon at 4pm.
