ORGANISERS of the St Patrick’s Day Tubbercurry road race say they are delighted with another successful event. Athletics is thriving in the south Sligo region and the number of young athletes taking up the sport is huge. South Sligo AC PRO, Emma Davitt, paid tribute to everyone who assisted with the running of the race, including the many sponsors. She said: “This was our 44th St Patrick’s Day race and 375 runners took to the streets in what was less than desirable weather conditions.

“We started the day off with a race for our junior club members at and it’s safe to say that junior athletes in south Sligo are in safe hands for many years to come.”

The 5K kicked off at midday with a total of 197 competitors lining out. This included 76 members of South Sligo AC who have just completed the popular couch to 5K programme. Emma explained: “For many this was their very first 5K race. It was a test of their true grit and determination to complete the race in such conditions.

“Micheal McDermott claimed first place coming in at 16: 59 and Abigail Colleran won First Lady home at 23: 04.”

The 10k started at 12: 10pm and saw 178 competitors cross the start line to head out on this challenging course. “The start line saw many new faces as well as some familiar ones returning for another challenge.

“However it was JP Carty, from Sligo AC, who gained an early lead and maintained it to come in first place at 32: 51 followed closely by Emmett Dunleavy ( Sligo AC) and Rossa Hurley ( Donore Harriers) completed the top three for the men.

“Sarah Doohan ( Corran AC) took the ladies first place title at 36: 54. With Lucy Brennan and Mari Johnston ( both Sligo AC) coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Success continued for Sligo AC with the ladies claiming the female team title. North Sligo were well represented also and they came away with the male team prize.

“Well earned refreshments and the prize giving took place in Killoran’s bar and restaurant as is tradition.

“Once again our race was well supported by surrounding clubs and a special thank you to all who came to compete.

“A sincere thanks to our sponsors and our club members for volunteering their time and helping us to make the day as successful as it was. A great day was had by all and we look forward to hosting our 45th race next year,” Emma said.
