Last push say water protestors in advance of march in Dublin

-

Supporters of the Right2Water campaign from Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal and other parts of the region will be travelling to Dublin this coming Saturday ( 8th April) to participate in the National Demonstration against water charges.

Speaking to The Sligo Champion Cllr Gino O Boyle said: “Thanks to the unwavering efforts of Right2Water campaigners across the State, the abolition of domestic water charges is firmly in our sights. We are now anxious to mobilise for one last push and we are appealing to supporters to join with us on Saturday next.”

“To date the Right2Water campaign has organised eight enormous demonstrations and well over 150 large local demonstrations across the state,” said Cllr Chris MacManus.

“The largest civil society group in Ireland, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, representing 600,000 workers has demanded the abolition of the charges and last year’s general election resulted in two thirds of the electorate voting for parties or independents opposed to the charges.” he said.

Appealing for support for the protest demonstration Cllr Declan Bree, said: “Without the sustained pressure exerted by the public through the Right2Water campaign since 2014, we would not be where we are now with charges nearly abolished.

“We know that Fine Gael and the E. U. are still determined to bring in water charges. They are not giving up. That’s why Saturday’s national demonstration is so important. We now need one more push to get this over the line.” said Cllr Bree.
