Degrees in English, politics, sociology and psychology at IT

-

IT Sligo is expanding its range of honours degree courses this September with two new landmark degree programmes in Humanities.

The Institute’s School of Business & Social Sciences is introducing two Bachelor of Arts ( Honours): one in English & Psychology, and the other in Sociology & Politics.

The new three- year degree programmes will have their first intake of students in the Autumn and signal a new departure for the Institute.

“This is a first for IT Sligo and the region, and is a response to the growing demand for degree courses featuring these subjects in the Humanities area,” explains Dr Breda McTaggart who is Head of Department of Social Sciences at IT Sligo.

“These courses provide a new, more accessible gateway to the study of humanities in the North West region. In the past, students have had to travel long distances to find courses like these. Now, established humanities degree opportunities are available closer to home, delivered by a well- known and experienced lecturing team.”

By studying English, students gather knowledge in a range of literary texts and periods, which will allow them to develop themselves as critical thinkers. The modules in psychology offer students an insight into the study of human behaviour. This degree is designed to prepare graduates for careers in community development, communications, teaching, arts management and research.

Bachelor of Arts ( Honours) in Sociology & Politics lets students examine society, its structure, its organisations, and ask questions around the complexities of this social world. Dividing time between sociology and politics, students will develop an in- depth understanding of the social forces that create and sustain the political and social world and the inequity that exists within these structures. The course will prepare graduates for careers in teaching, community development, social policy and national & local government.
