Heavy rain postpones Rovers league game with Galway
FRIDAY night should have been a crucial evening for Sligo Rovers but their meeting with Galway United at Eamonn Deacy Park was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Although conditions initially appeared to be satisfactory, persistent heavy rain from 7pm onwards gave the officials little choice but to postpone the game.
Attempts were made to clear the pitch, but those attempts were in vain as the heavy rain continued and the pitch continued to resemble a swimming pool rather than a football pitch.
At the scheduled kick- off time, an announcement was made that there would be a delay of 15 minutes to kick- off, but there was no chance that this game would go ahead.
Following consultation with representatives from both clubs, managers and the FAI, the decision was made to postpone the game, taking place last night ( Monday) instead.
Eamonn Deacy Park is understood to have hosted around five games in three days last week, putting the pitch ( pictured) under severe pressure.
Doubts over Dave Robertson’s future as Rovers manager continue to hang over the club.
Rovers face Bohemian FC at home on Saturday evening in another crucial game for the Bit o’Red who are desperate for a few positive results to pull them up the table and out of danger very quickly.
