Tubber garda station ‘ not fit for purpose’ - Scanlon

-

TUBBERCURRY Garda station is “completely unfit for purpose”, according to Sligo/ Leitrim Deputy Eamon Scanlon.

Raising the issue with the Taoiseach in the Dáil this week, Deputy Scanlon said, “The situation at Tubbercurry Garda Station is completely unacceptable and needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency. There are major health and safety issues. The building no longer meets the needs of a functioning Garda Station. When it was built back in 1960 there was only one Garda Sergeant and three other Gardaí. Today there are two Sergeants and eleven Gardaí and I understand there are plans to increase those numbers further. Tubbercurry is the third busiest station in the Sligo- Leitrim division.

“The station has no interview room, office space, privacy or disabled access. It’s a ridiculous situation – the Garda Building Unit has visited the station and is well aware of the situation but Government funding is needed to carry out the upgrade works. The Programme for Government contains a commitment for “new and refurbished Garda Stations” and the Taoiseach must ensure that this commitment is upheld.”
