The Belfry collect the Championship crown

-

THE Belfry continued their excellent record in the Sligo Rovers Astro league after collecting the Championship division crown at the expense of GSS. In what was a very tight league as a whole, the top two teams in the division battled it out on the final day of the league, with GSS requiring a three goal win in order to become champions, where as the Belfry knew they needed to avoid a heavy defeat in order to collect the winning trophy. The game was a tight affair as expected with both sides not willing to set up an all out attack from the start. As the game went on, the Belfry began to come out on top but failed to capitalise after some heroic defending from GSS. Twenty minutes into the game and the Belfry drew first blood. After some neat build up play on the wing, the ball was presented to the in form Ian Rossitter to slot home and give the Belfry a 1- 0 lead. To their credit, GSS never let their heads drop thereafter and were rewarded for their patience on the stroke of half time from the penalty spot. Brendan Lowry stepped up to make it 1- 1 at the break. The second half provided the Belfry with the best chances as they went in search for the winner. However some heroic goalkeeping and defending ensured that GSS held onto the draw in what was an excellent team effort from both sides. The Belfry were presented with the winning league trophy at full time along with the winners medals. GSS were awarded with the runners up medals, while their star striker Brendan Lowry collected the Golden boot award after notching 8 goals in 8 games. In his victory speech, Jim Sheridan of the Belfry, said: “I would like to thank all of the players for the commitment for the season, it’s very much appreciated. It’s great to be able to come out with a great bunch of lads each week and enjoy a game of football, and huge credit goes to the Sligo Rovers league as the organisation is always done to perfection”.
