GALWAY SLIGO 0- 13 0- 7

SLIGO concluded their Connacht Minor League campaign in Milltown last Saturday evening, where champions Galway sealed the title with a six- point win.

In the last game for both sides prior to the start of the Connacht Minor Championship, Sligo now turn their attention to a semi- final meeting with Leitrim in June.

As in their loss to Mayo in the previous round, Sligo struggled in the opening period here and Galway amassed a 0- 8 to 0- 1 lead by the half- time whistle. Sligo’s sole first half score came from a Barry Gorman free after six minutes, but the home side dominated proceedings to lead by seven points at the break. The situation improved for Sligo soon after half time with points from Niall Colsh and Brian Cox, but a red card for Red Óg Murphy after 43 minutes halted David Cummins’ side momentum. From there Sligo to their credit battled hard and added four further points through Colsh ( 2), Conal Ryan and Barry Gorman, but Galway always looked in control and ran out sixpoint winners. It was Sligo’s second loss of the campaign – they finished third in the standings with three wins from their five games. Sligo: Daniel Lyons; Oisin Conlon, Josh Ellis, Evan Lyons; Colm Doddy, Brian Cox ( 0- 1), Rory McHugh; Evan Lavin, Barry Gorman ( 0- 2, 1f); James Carroll, Niall Colsh ( 0- 3), Luke Towey; Red Óg Murphy, Ciaran O’Dowd, Karl McKenna. Subs used: Jake Stephenson, Joe McMunn, Conal Ryan ( 0- 1), Roland Anderson, Cian Brett. INSET: Josh Ellis of Sligo.

Enniscrone/ Kilglass got their Division Three campaign off to a winning start last Saturday evening when they accounted for Ballymote at Quigabar.

The hosts won comfortably on a eight- point margin in this league opener.

On a glorious evening, the home side established a seven- point interval lead before seeing the game out in the second period, though Ballymote applied pressure for long spells in the second half which could have resulted in a different outcome.

Both of these teams suffered relegation from Division Two last year, and will harbour hopes of returning to the second tier at the conclusion of this season’s campaign.
