Rowers take on Lough Rynn

-

SLIGO Rowing Club recently competed in Lough Rynn with newer members getting competitive times.

With the Head of the Season about to conclude and with many heads cancelled, Sligo coaches were keen for their crews and particularly the newer members of the club to get some valuable race time experience.

Lough Rynn was their first competitive event ahead of the regatta season. With that in mind Sligo coaches Tom Colsh and Molua Donohue worked with Fergie Hannon of Athlone Boat Club and John Lowe of Carrick- on- Shannon Rowing Club to schedule and run a very successful event for the three clubs on the Lough Rynn course.

Sligo provided the medals, Carrick the safety launches and Athlone the personnel to marshal the event. All three clubs worked together seamlessly and a great day’s racing was had by all ahead of the upcoming sprint regatta season. Newcomers to the sport Angus Carter, Adam Rattigan, Andrew Waters and Killion McCarthy all performed very well on the water at Lough Rynn for the junior boys.

Isabelle Waters had an excep- tional row in the double in her first competitive event. The sprint regatta season now begins in earnest with the club travelling to Islandbridge in Dublin, followed by Commercial Regatta on the same stretch of water on Sunday.

The club continues to fund raise on a monthly basis for purchasing new equipment including a new single which will be delivered this month from Portugal. The boat is to be named after the Lady of the Lake – “Beezie Gallagher” who daily rowed the same stretch of water as that which the club now trains on. A boat naming ceremony will be held to formally name the boat together with the “Dooney Rock” quad and the “Slish Wood” single which were purchased last year with the assistance of SCP funding. The club also enjoyed the recent St. Patricks Day Parade rowing a double through town winning the Best Represents Theme Sports award. The float designed by Ray Murtagh, sponsored by Diverse Print & Graphics and built by Bernie Tiernan was well received by the general public. Sligo Rowing Club will again host their own sprint regatta on Saturday 29th July in Doorly Park.
