The Sligo Champion

Novel golf challenge is a hit

-

THE Radisson Blu sponsored West of Ireland Golf Championship, which begins this week at County Sligo Golf Club in Rosses Point, was launched on Saturday last with an innovative washing machine challenge.

The inspiration for the challenge came from former 2 time winner of the West of Ireland, Rory McIlroy, who famously used to work on his chipping technique by hitting golf balls through the open door of a washing machine.

Organisers of this year’s event challenged some of this year’s contestants in the West of Ireland to pit their skills against some of the younger club members in a fun afternoon of golf at Rosses Point. It’s all about raising the profile of this year’s competition,” said Tom Horkan, Captain of County Sligo Golf Club. “Rory McIlroy won the West of Ireland twice, just over a decade ago, and when you consider that other former winners like Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry have also gone on to great things, we’d encourage people to come out to watch the competition this week and next - they could be looking at some great golfing stars in the making.” The Radisson Blu West of Ireland Golf Championship takes place from 14th- 18th April.
