DEAN Clancy boxing out the Ballinacarrow Boxing Club secured his third National Boxing Title last weekend at the National Boxing Stadium.

He boxed Liam Murphy from the Cherry Orchard and from the opening bell one could see the difference in hand and foot speed.

The young Sligonian scored well with the jab, right cross and left hook in the first and as his opponent tired in the second.

Clancy had even more success with the straight left. Clancy coasted home winning the Junior 1 50 Kilo National Athletic Boxing Title on a unanimous decision. He beat Clayton Suffcliff in the semi final on a 4: 1 Judges decision and is coached by Jason Clancy Senior. Ballinacarrow Boxing Club thanked their main sponsor Provident Financial Plc for their help throughout the year.

STUDENTS from IT Sligo hosted Sligo’s first SUPathlon event on Tuesday, April 4th.

Competitors were put to the test in a three- tiered event starting at the Riverside Hotel.

They ran, cycled and stand up paddled during the hour- long contest.

The race kicked off at 10am with a 850m sprint from the Riverside Hotel to Doorly Park.

There they got on their bikes and cycled 5km to Tobernalt Holy Well.

The second transition took them from their bikes and onto Stand Up Paddle board ( SUP) at the Holy Well pier in one of the most scenic race finishes imaginable down 4km of the Garavogue River and back into Doorly Park.

The winners crossed the line in just under one hour making for a very manageable event that will now be an annual signature Sligo race.

This race was conceived in consultation with Northwest Adventure Tours by the students from BBS Applied Sport with Business as part of their Sport and Adventure Tourism module, run by Lecturer Kerry Larkin.

The Riverside Hotel hosted the pre- race meet and competitors were treated to a motivation talk with Champion Triathlete Laura Tighe.

The event is the first adventure race to start and finish in Sligo town and to use the unique format of run, cycle and SUP.

The students hope that the event will become an annual occasion, attracting tourists to Sligo town and highlighting Sligo as a destination for Sport and Adven- ture Tourism. Northwest Adventure Tours were delighted with how well the event went and have highlighted the collaborations with the likes of Sligo Kayak Club and Wild Wet Adventures as crucial to the continued success of this event.

Participants said they thoroughly enjoyed taking part and praised Sligo as an ideal location for adventure sports.
