Garda had to swerve to avoid oncoming car

A Garda in a patrol car had to swerve to avoid colliding with an overtaking car on the approach to Strandhill, Sligo District Court was told.

Summoned for dangerous driving at Lecarrow on May 6th last was Lin Lina of Shannon Eighter.

Inspector Donal Sweeney said that at 3.15pm the defendant, who was driving a jeep was in the middle of overtaking as she approached a bend. A Garda car coming out of Strandhill had to swerve to avoid colliding with the vehicle.

Mr Gerard McGovern, solicitor ( defending) pleaded that it was a wide sweeping bend and the defendant didn’t get up enough speed to complete the manoevre in time and was in the wrong gear.

He said the defendant, a mother of two, was living in Ireland for the past 15 years.

Judge Kevin Kilrane reduce the charge to one of careless driving and imposed a fine of € 100.

At the same court, Donagh McSharry, Stone Park, Dromahair was fined € 40 for travelling at 65kph in a 50kph zone at Ballincar on September 19th last.
