Minister urged to get Brazilian Beef banned

-

THE Government needs to insist immediate action is taken by the EU to ban Brazilian beef.

That’s according to Mayor of Sligo Municipal District Cllr Marie Casserly.

She called on the Council to call on Agriculture Minister Michael Creed to call an emergency meeting of EU Ministers to ban Brazilian beef following revelations about the alleged behaviour of Brazilian beef and poultry exports.

Cllr Michael Clarke agreed: “It’s vital we move to protect our own beef produce. We have the best beef in the world.”

Cllr Joe Queenan said it was “shocking to read the standards acceptable in Brazil.”

Cllr Chris MacManus said Minister Creed should be looking for an “immediate halt to Brazilian beef.”

Cllr Sinead Maguire said that the Irish beef industry was “one of our strongest” and it was “vital to protect it.”

Cllr Margaret Gormley then called on Minister Creed and the Taoiseach to ensure that the Dunally Vet Lab is not closed.

Cllr Thomas Healy said it was “chickens coming home to roost” as he and Cllr MacManus had put down motions on Brazilian beef before.
