Victory for Merville Utd

-

BALLYGAWLEY Celtic took the three points with a 1 – 0 win over Carrick Town in the Sligo Palleets Premier League at the weekend. The only goal of the game was scored by James Mackie. In the T P BRENNAN Connacht cup Quarter Final Manor Rangers travelled to take on Ballinasloe Town but the home side proved too strong on the day. Eoin McCormack opened the scoring in the tenth minute when his side were awarded a penalty. They added to the score sheet when centre half Joe Woods headed home from a set piece to leave the home team two up at the break. Eoin McCormack put the game beyond Manor’s reach when he scored twice in to complete his hattrick and a convincing win for Ballinasloe. In the other Quarter Final, Boyle Celtic and Carbury FC couldn’t be separated and unfortunately for Carbury luck wasn’t on their side when conceding an own Goal. Keith Carty did score for the visitors and the game went in to extra time. It was Aaron Calpin who scored Boyle Celtic’s winner in extra time. MERVILLE played Arrow Harps in the under 12 final in the showgrounds with the early kick off at 11 on Good Friday in front of a big crowd despite the early start.

It was a very close game between two good teams with only one goal separating the sides at the finish,

The game started evenly with very few chances with both teams defending well,

The break- through came mid way during the first half when Ronan Niland got the ball and drove towards the box,

He beat a couple of players and reversed a great ball to Dylan Street who was through on goal and with a great finish swept the ball home,

Arrow Harps started the second half well and applied plenty of pressure but could not fashion any chances,

Merville defended well and kept Arrow Harps at bay and could have got a second themselves before the final whistle blew to great delight of everyone involved with Merville. Man- of- the- match went to Ronan O’Hehir for his fantastic performance in what was a close encounter in the Showgrounds.

The U14s also defeated Manor Raners 1- 0 in their final, adding to their Connacht Cup triumph.
