St John’s take on Geevagh
ST John’s seniors were in action in Round 2 of the Division 2 league on Good Friday evening in Stenson Park.
They suffered their first defeat of the season when an understrength team went down to a strong Geevagh outfit on a 1- 9 to 2- 8 scoreline.
Geevagh led by 1- 5 to 0- 3 at half time and try as they might the home side could not make much headway against a determined visiting side in the second half.
They badly missed the steadying influence of some players who were unable to get off work in Dublin for a Friday evening game.
St Johns line- out was N O’Donnell; E Roche, N Hayes, A Clerkin; C Harrison, P Mc Namara( 0- 1), R Fahy( 0- 1); S Stenson( 0- 2), O Cox( 0- 1); C Keaney, B Mc Gowan( 1- 0), C Jordan( 0- 1); C Greene( 0- 2), F Grennan( 0- 1), R Gordon; C Mc Govern, S Kilcawley, K Sweeney, C Hough, A Kerr, J Reilly.
The senior team got back to winning ways on Easter Sunday afternoon in Round 3 of the League.
Despite absentees through injury from Friday’s encounter St John’s managed to overcome the challenge of visitors St Farnan’s at a wind- swept Stenson Park.
St John’s won with the narrowest of margins on a 0- 10 to 0- 9 scoreline. Westsiders St Farnan’s got off to a good start and led by 0- 6 to 0- 4 at half time and indeed this lead could have been much greater but for two great saves by St John’s goalkeeper Noel O’Donnell. The second half was a ding- dong battle and only one point separated the sides at the full- time whistle.
