EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCES

Extraordinary Killargue and Kinlough religious experiences in the second half of the 1800s will be revisited in a public lecture in Manorhamilton Library on this Friday night, April 21, at 8 p. m.

This lecture is entitled ‘ A Transformed People – Parish Missions in the diocese of Kilmore 18501880.’ The lecture will be delivered by Fr Ultan McGoohan and it will provide details on the impact of parish missions in the 19th century.

The Catholic Church in Ireland was transformed between 1850 and 1880. In one post Famine generation, Irish Catholics became a devout, church going and pious people. They would remain so for almost 100 years afterwards.

Parish missions proved to be a vital catalyst in the transformation of Irish Catholicism during this period. Fr McGoohan’s lecture will tell the story from the historical perspective of the diocese of Kilmore.

He will detail many Parish Missions anecdotes that are particularly related to some very extraordinary experiences that occurred in North Leitrim, and especially in Killargue and Kinlough.
