Vote of sympathy passed at Municipal Authority meeting

-

MONDAY morning’s meeting of Sligo Municipal District was adjourned for a short period as a mark of respect to the Harte family.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was proposed by Councillor Gino O’Boyle, and seconded by Councillor Declan Bree who lives not far from the scene of the fatal fire at Market Street.

Cllr Bree said: “I wish to second the proposal that we extend our sympathy to the family of Sonny and Sean Harte who died so tragically in the early hours of Saturday morning last and I propose that the business of this meeting would stand adjourned for a short period as a mark of respect to the deceased.

“The people of this community are still trying to come to terms with Saturday morning’s terrible tragedy.

“Sonny Harte and his son Sean are members of a large and respected Sligo family and people are devastated by the tragic loss of life.

“There is an air of shock and sadness in the community. I believe it is fitting that we would extend our condolences and deepest sympathy to the extended Harte family,” said Cllr Bree.

Councillor Chris MacManus told the meeting he had known Sonny Harte for over thirty years and knew Sean “since he was a cub.”

“I want to pass on my sympathies to Sean’s mother Sue and his family,” he said.

Councillor Sinead Maguire said it was “an exceptional tragic situation” for the entire Harte family. Councillors Tom MacSharry, Seamus Kilgannon, Hubert Keaney and Mayor of Sligo Municipal District Cllr Marie Casserly all extended their sympathies to the Harte Family.

Sligo/ Leitrim Deputy Tony McLoughlin said” “I want to express my deepest condolences to the Harte family on this tragic loss that has shaken Sligo Town to its core.”
