New season at the Hawk’s Well has something to suit everyone

FROM comedy to music, theatrical performanc­es and much more, the Hawk’s Well Theare’s new season caters for all age groups and interests.

Featuring an exciting array of theatrical events, music performanc­es, children’s events, comedy, workshops and more, the new and free brochure is available at various locations across the county and is also available for download on the Hawk’s Well Theatre website.

For theatre lovers, the Kinevane Trilogy will be a must- see. Silent ( Thurs 18 May), Forgotten, ( Thurs 15 June) and Underneath, ( Thurs 13 July) are all written and performed by Olivier award- winner, Pat Kinevane. As part of this year’s Bealtaine Festival, the fun Creaking comes to the theatre.

Presented as a staged reading, this moving and funny drama documentar­y stars actor Geraldine Plunkett and will also have a new cast of volunteers each night, so if you would like to be part of this event, register your interest with the theatre. Starring Jon Kenny and Mary McEvoy, John B Keane’s The Successful TD comes to town in June. Catastroph­e Theatre’s A Midsummer Nights Murder is a midsummer murder mystery dinner party taking place at the Sligo Park Hotel. Another theatre highlight is Anna Livia Lesbia - a play that centres on the appearance of the author on The Late Late Show in 1980 when she became the first lesbian in Ireland to ‘ come out’ publicly on television. Other theatre highlights include The Quiet Land starring Des Keogh and Derry Power, The Olive Tree by Bigger Picture Projects, Katie’s Birthday Party and Stone’s Throw Theatre’s Broken Promise Land.

Music- wise, there are many gigs to tempt and covering many genres. Anything Goes & the Dublin Gospel Choir and We Banjo 3 return to the theatre. The fantastica­lly energetic Wallis Bird visits in June, and US songstress, Vonda Shepard of Ally McBeal fame comes to the Hawk’s Well with her smoking hot band for a midsummer performanc­e. There will be two nights of The Inaugural Kieran Quinn’s Teenage Theme Showcase in May. For country fans, the Kings of Country Show featuring Ray Lynam, Mick Flavin, John Hogan, Frank McCaffrey & Joe Moore, will be a night not to miss. For fans of traditiona­l and roots music, there are some great gigs scheduled for the theatre, including The Knotted Cord Quartet, American artists Tim O’Brien and Eli West and the great singer songwriter Freddie White, who also will give a songwritin­g workshop at the theatre. The Hawk’s Well Duet at the Well series continues, featuring further musical pairings such as Leon Mooney & Leslie Jones, Michael Rooney & June McCormack and Angelina Carberry & Dan Brouder. The great Sligo Jazz Festival runs from 25- 29th of July and the theatre will host performanc­es by a stellar line- up of internatio­nal jazz performers including Soweto Kinch, Christine Tobin, Liane Carroll, Sara Colman, Emilia Martensson, Meilana Gillard, Shannon Barnett, Kieran Quinn and many, many more.

Dance highlights include the award- winning company Dylan Quinn Dance, who bring their production TOST to the theatre in May, followed by more dancing events later in the season from two local dance schools; the Chapel Lane School of Performing Arts and Victoria Walker Dance.

Comedy listings include Connemara storytelle­r, Paraic Breathnach, Naked Camera star PJ Gallagher, singing comedian David O’Doherty, and the great Ruby Wax.

There will be many interestin­g talks and discussion­s. The Yeats Internatio­nal Summer School opens on Thursday the 20th of July with lectures and events running for the following two weeks as part of the Tread Softly Festival. A Literary Lunch celebrates the joy of reading with guests Elaine Coghill, Stephen Doyle, Geraldine Duignan, Luke Henderson, Benny Daly, Vanessa Job and more.

Mrs Brown’s Boys’ star, Eilish O’Carroll brings her new show - Live, Love, Laugh to the theatre in May. There will also be an Irish language edition of Books & Wine, Leabhair agus Fíon; An Evening with Diarmuid Gavin; a panel discussion on the British intellectu­al John Berger, author of seminal book, What We See and What We Know, and the Hawk’s Well Theatre’s The Way We Were series continues with another special evening celebratin­g Sligo history featuring author and retired librarian, John McTernan, local historian Simone Hickey and Sligo Harbour Master, John Carton.

There are lots of events for children over the summer; The Avalon Centre’s Our Show 17 in May, Ceol Connected return with their own brand of interactiv­e traditiona­l music, puppetry, and storytelli­ng in The Far Field; the annual popular Cairde Kids: One World Disco with DJ Will Softly and Jay Ryan’s The Trouble with the Fairies. Classes for children include the ever- popular SingSkool Mini courses, Toddler Drama with Deirdre Gaule, Bossa Nova Babies & Boppers, a one- day Amazing Circus Skills Workshop, and another Books & Lemonade Club session. There are also a number of exciting summer camps for children such as Singskool Summer Camps, a new Jester Academy Summer Camp and the Hawk’s Well Creative Academy Summer Camp.

Adult workshops and courses include a new Acting for Over 50s class with Noelle Brown, Acting for Adults classes with Jean Marie Perinetti, a Lighting Design course, Yoga & Harmony early morning yoga and music session running as part of the theatre’s Summer Solstice Celebratio­ns, and further Sing for the hell of it! sessions.
